Surf Talk Newsletter - 1st Edition

Welcome to SURF TALK, the quarterly newsletter of the Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum. It’s been our pleasure to share surfing’s rich culture and history for over 35 years.

2023 was a great year at HBISM with great strides in our mission to serve the public good through the lens of surf culture. We curated two of our best exhibits to date, Finding CalifoDuke’s Dream Came True-Surfing’s Road to the Olympics! (new exhibit)

2024 will be an Epic year for the museum. After a short refurbishment, our newest exhibit “Dukes Dream - Surfing's Road to the Olympics' opened March 1st. The exhibit covers the history and efforts of swimming gold medalist Duke Kahanamoku as well as ISA President Fernando Aguirre to convince the IOC that Surfing was worthy of Olympic status. In an Olympic year, this exhibit is especially relevant and interesting. Don't miss it!

Duke’s Dream Came True Grand Opening VIP before party is March 21st from 4 pm - 6 pm. Lifetime Members and New Members are welcome to attend early from 4 pm - 6 pm. If you JOIN NOW or RENEW your membership via link: Memberships – HBISM you will have VIP admission priority to the DUKE exhibit VIP opening from 4 pm - 6 pm. The exhibit will open to the Public March 21st from 6 pm - 9 pm. Any questions please email us at: internationalsurfmuseumhb@gmail.com

We held the first of many K-12 educational programs, “Surfin Science”, that entwined environmental sciences, surfboard engineering, hydrodynamics and science materials, through art and surf culture. We remained engaged with the community through surf music at Surfing Sundays, and our Adult educational program at which William Katt and PT Townend described the socio-political environment that spawned the book and movie “Big Wednesday”. We also collaborated with the Surfing Walk of Fame on “The MacAllister” scholarship award program to NSSA surfers in honor of Don MacAllister. We hope you were able to participate in some or all of these fun and educational events.

We appreciate all of you who support our mission and hope that you will become a member of the HBISM family this year. March and April are our membership drive months. You’ll find the levels and benefits linked here: Memberships – HBISM.

One of the coolest benefits will be first rights to VIP tickets to an epic showing of the classic 70’s film “Free Ride” hosted by Shaun Tomson, at the Surf City Ale House. We can guarantee that this will be a special night and that it will sell out to members before the public. Dates and details to follow. Please follow this link Memberships – HBISM, become a sustaining member and enjoy VIP status all year.
